How do we know if we are called to missions? Or maybe even you feel as if you are called to missions, and are wondering what you need to do with next. I pray that these steps help you work that out whether it is short- term or long-term missions that you feel called to.
Aspiration
The first step is to discern the aspirations you are experiencing. If you feel an inescapable desire to become a missionary, take time to learn what the qualifications and tasks of a missionary are. Compare your desire with the biblical expectations and responsibilities of a missionary to see if you truly aspire to this calling. Do you aspire to missions?
Affirmation
If you believe you may be called to missions, seek the affirmation—or caution—of those around you. Start by speaking with your pastors and sharing your aspirations. If they do not already have close access to your life, invite them to observe your character and doctrine. Ask them for honest feedback and guidance on whether you are biblically qualified for the task.
Next, seek the input of trusted, godly friends who are walking closely with the Lord. Ask them if they see missionary potential in you, invite them to pray for you, and encourage them to be honest. While their answers are not the ultimate factor in your decision, if no one else affirms your aspirations, it may be a sign that missions is not the right path for you at this time. Who do you need to go to for affirmation?
Accessibility
Consider whether the missionary task—and all that it requires—is a realistic opportunity for you right now. Ensure you have the financial freedom to uproot and go, as debt is the number one roadblock to missions. Confirm that your spouse and family affirm this calling and fully support the decision to go. Assess whether your church is willing to send you and provide the necessary backing. Finally, evaluate any life circumstances that might make leaving unwise at this time. Is missions accessible to you?
